Factory Authorized vs Independent Repair: What It Actually Means

The phrase gets used loosely. Here is the real difference, and when it genuinely matters for your appliance.

Short answer

A factory authorized servicer has been trained and approved by the manufacturer, can order genuine parts directly, and can perform in-warranty repairs on that brand. An independent servicer can repair the appliance but may not access proprietary parts or perform warranty work.

What authorization actually involves

Manufacturers approve a service company after brand-specific technical training, and they then grant direct access to the parts distribution channel, technical bulletins and diagnostic software. It is not a marketing badge — it is a supply-chain and training relationship.

Where it matters most

It matters most on appliances still under manufacturer warranty, and on brands with proprietary components. Pitt Cooking is a clear example: the burner system installs directly into the countertop and service requires brand-specific training. Liebherr and True Residential integrated columns are similar.

Where it matters less

For a ten-year-old mainstream washer or dryer, a well-equipped independent shop with genuine OEM parts will serve you just as well. Competence and parts quality matter more than the badge at that point.

What we are authorized for

Lerman Appliances is a factory authorized service dealer for Bertazzoni, Hestan, BEKO, Blomberg, Liebherr, Marvel, Speed Queen, True Residential, Pitt Cooking, Fagor, Faber and IKEA. We service more than 40 additional brands as an independent servicer using genuine OEM parts.

The question to ask

Ask any company two things: are you authorized for this specific brand, and do you use genuine OEM parts? The second question matters on every job, authorized or not.
